Purim Livens Up Southern Russian Community
Purim went over very well in Russia's southernmost Jewish community,
located in the North Caucasus city of Derbent. Several hundred people
gathered in the great hall of the Synagogue to mark this holiday of joy.
Chief Rabbi of Derbent Ovadiya Isaakov opened the event, underlining that
although Purim celebrates an occasion that took place 2,000 years ago, the
joy it brings to Jews worldwide carries through to this day. Participants
listened to a congratulatory message from Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel
Lazar, before the Megilat Esther was read aloud. In grand tradition,
everyone booed and hissed whenever the name Haman was pronounced.
Guests were invited to a tasty kosher feast, which took place at the home
of Chief Rabbi Isaakov. There, each and everyone received mishloah manot,
while poorer persons received donations collected amongst members of the
congregation. A separate dance was held that evening for young Jews, with
smaller parties for the Children's and Women's Clubs held earlier on.
The Jewish community of Derbent is a full member of the Federation of
Jewish Communities of Russia.
