Brooklyn lights
Nearly 200 members of the Jewish community of Kensington gathered for the
menorah lighting ceremony on Caton Avenue overpass crossing the Prospect
expressway for the menorah lighting ceremony organized by the Chabad of
Kensington in collaboration with the Gorsky – Kavkazian Jewish Center.
Joined by the New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, World
Renowned Boxing Champion Dmitry Salita, Pinchus Haikind, Executive
Assistant of Deputy Comptroller and other prominent leaders of the
communities, the 6th night of Chanukah was one to remember.
Cars, and “Mitzvah Tanks” with menorahs strapped to
their roof tops were double and triple parked on the overpass. A group of
young boys from Crown Heights joined in dance and song and the crowd just
kept on growing as the night progressed.
The New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson
congratulated the community with Chanukah and lit the middle candle, from
which the rest of the candles were lit. Boxing Champion Dmitry Salita lit
the first two candle. The rest of the candles were lit by Pinchus Haikind,
Executive Assistant of Deputy Comptroller, Rabbi Moshe Chaim Levin, Chief
Rabbi of Chabad of Kensington, and Vitaliy Ruvinov, Youth Director of
Gorsky – Kavkazian Jewish Center.
Earlier that afternoon, children and adults enjoyed a
fun activity at the Chabad of Kensington. Participants learned how to play
different types of drums watched a holiday video and munched on delicious
snacks, including donuts from the unique foot donut menorah.
The giant menorah on Caton Avenue, constructed by the
Chabad of Kensington, is seen by millions of cars that pass on the
Prospect expressway daily. It serves as a reminder of the miracle of
Chanukah and of the message that even a small candle can dispel the
darkness.
